EMS 217 Prehospital Emergency Pharmacology (3 credits)
Prerequisite Enrollment in the Paramedic Program.
Course Description Identification of specific medications and their effects used to treat medical and traumatic emergencies including common medications found in the home.
Course Content Indications, contraindications, and polypharmacology of medications
Pathophysiology and pharmacology of medication administration
Identify medication classifications

- Discuss the ability to comprehend, apply, and integrate knowledge of pharmacology to formulate a treatment plan intended to mitigate emergencies and improve the overall health of the patient.
- Explain pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of medications used to treat specific medical and traumatic emergencies..
- Assess information pertaining to EMS patients and medical conditions/pathophysiology, pharmacology, disease processes, and research.
- Identify the major classifications of medications according to mechanism of action, organ system affected, and clinical condition treated.
