EM 330 Risk Assessment and Preparedness (5 credits)



Prerequisite Current enrollment in the Bachelor of Applied Science in Emergency Management program.

Course Description
This course builds fundamental skills in risk identification, analysis, and evaluation within the context of emergency management and enables the creation of appropriate preparedness measures.

C. Risk Assessment Tools
D. Risk Assessment Methods
E. Linking Risk Assessment to mission areas, Business Impact Analysis, and Continuity of Operations
F. Risk Assessment role in the National Preparedness System
G. Applying a Risk Assessment model to improve emergency management programs.

Student Outcomes
  1. Articulate the impact of threats and hazards in the risk assessment process.  

  1. Develop hazard analyses and vulnerability assessments for organizations using various risk assessment processes and tools.  

  1. Conduct an organizational gap analysis of preparedness, response systems, and equipment.  

  1. Analyze potential business impacts of an event within the framework of the Business Impact Analysis planning lifecycle.   

  1. Identify best practices used for benchmarking continuity programs and plans. 

  1. Create an emergency management preparedness program informed by risk assessment analysis data.

  1. Evaluate disaster risk in communities and organizations using current scientific, geographic, sociocultural, and technological knowledge, systems, and equipment.
  2. Analyze organizations using the systems theory of management to define outcomes, identify risk, and create performance measures in emergency management settings.
  3. Critique historical and modern sociocultural constructs that have led to disparities in equity, diversity, and inclusion within the EM profession and delivery of EM programs to the whole community.
