PCADE 055 English in Occupational Settings (5 credits)



Prerequisite CASAS Appraisal equal to level ABE level 4

Course Description
This course is designed to strengthen the student’s writing skills in the workplace through the study of vocabulary, sentence structure, and punctuation. The student will compose clear business documents, and learn how to navigate the job market.

Course Content
This is based on College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education.

Broaden vocabulary for academic and occupational settings
Format emails and letters
Use specialized vocabulary
Use various sentence structures
Use conventions of the field including puncuation, spelling, capitalization, and grammar
Interview skills
Descriptive and explanatory writing
Time management skills
Complete online forms

Student Outcomes
 

  1. Develop vocabulary and diction in order to communicate effectively in various business settings.
  2. Reflect on academic and career pathways in order to decipher which pathway suits a student’s goals.     
  3. Implement academic and occupational knowledge in order to adapt and succeed in academic and workplace environments.
  4. Create business documents using formatting, grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and vocabulary in response to various business settings and audiences.
  5. Navigate job application processes.
