Spanish (AA-DTA) Course Map

Created by Pierce faculty, this map outlines the initial coursework for this career field and for transfer to a four-year institution. It provides you a clear path to complete your degree by listing a specific set of courses relevant to your program and career.  The map is designed with the appropriate number of credits and meets degree requirements. Courses are organized in a recommended sequence; please schedule accordingly. If a course is unavailable, select the next appropriate course within the sequence. If you want to change a course on this map you must speak with an advisor to assure you meet all degree requirements. For each course, a purpose statement explains how the content relates to your career field. On this map, there may be instances when you will be required to select a course from several options. Use these purpose statements and notes to choose the course that best aligns with your interests and needs. You will also find action items to complete to assure you progress and graduate on time.  While this map is a great guide to courses required to complete an Associate in Arts - Direct Transfer Agreement (AA-DTA) Degree Requirements , you are responsible for fulfilling all degree requirements.  Questions? 1. College Success


  • Course purpose: A foundational course to explore and affirm a career choice and build upon the skills, knowledge, and resources that will support you at Pierce College and beyond.

  • Note

    • Successfully completing either COLLG 110 or COLLG 115 will fulfill the College Success requirement. 
    • A COLLG 110 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 110 course and a COLLG 115 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 115 course. 

2. English Composition I


  • Course purpose: Clear and strategic written communication with others is a central feature of all careers. You will apply rhetorical concepts, analyze text, compose work, and demonstrate information competency which are required if you want to be a teacher or a translator.

  • Note: Your advisor will assist you in reviewing your Guided Self Placement and selecting either the 5-credit or the 7-credit co-requisite ENGL& 101 + ENGLC 101 course. 

4. Spanish Course Recommendation


Take one course each quarter until sequence is finished.

  • Course purpose: This course serves a foundational role in the Spanish series. 

  • Course purpose: This course provides the foundational language skills for those students pursuing a Spanish/Latin American degree.  

    Note: If transferring to UW, this course is required.

  • Course purpose: At this point, you should be committed to a career as an interpreter/translator, teacher, or seeking to minor in Spanish/Latin American studies. If your career path is education, you should also complete SPAN& 123 because some education programs and certificates require three quarters of a language to fulfill their foreign language requirement. 

  • Course purpose: If you are looking to either major or minor in Spanish, and wish to expand your conversational and writing skills, you should take this intermediate-level course. Strong emphasis is made on building oral skills and introducing more sophisticated sources in the target language.

6. English Composition II


  • Course purpose: This course is required for the interpreter/education/Latin American studies degree pathway. You will receive grounding in reading and an understanding in the theory of the field and research.

     

    Note: This course is recommended for transfer to UW.

7. Political Science Course Recommendation


Choose one

  • Course purpose: This course provides foundational knowledge of government and political ideologies to better understand the political systems of Latin America. If you want to pursue a career as a translator/interpreter, you must have some basic knowledge of the legal system and political process. 

  • Course purpose: In the interpreting/Spanish/teaching profession you will need to have the ability to understand global issues that affect the population you work with or teach about. Students are required to evaluate the actions of global people/persons and how others approach global issues.

  • Course purpose: This course covers sample methods, use of statistical terms, experimental and observational studies, the uses and misuses of statistics, and communication of data results.

  • Course purpose: Language teachers work with diverse populations in our society. This course explores universal human rights which will help you understand the communities you will likely work with.  

  • Course purpose: If you are going into Latin American Studies or Spanish you will need to examine the relationship between humans and their environments. This course will serve as a basis for future coursework in cultural, economic, and political studies pertaining to Latin America and Latino communities in the U.S.

  • Course purpose: This Social Science option is for you if seeking a career in teaching/education.

  • Course purpose: Understanding of the social problems that affect the members of the community they serve is important for language professionals. This course will provide foundational knowledge for you to compare and contrast social problems outside of the U.S as you continue your education.

13. Natural Science Course Recommendation


Choose one

  • Course purpose: This course is a life science that covers scientific methodology and evolution, ecological perspectives, cells, biotechnology, genetics, diversity of life, metabolism and life and reproduction. 

  • Course purpose: This course reviews the relationship of basic chemical concepts to issues in modern society. It is intended for non-science majors.

  • Course purpose: This course introduces mathematical and chemical principles such as problem solving, graphs, calculator use, atomic structure, periodic properties, inorganic nomenclature, the mole, balancing equations and stoichiometry. Non-lab course.

  • Course purpose: The course covers measurements, significant figures, dimensional analysis, and fundamentals of atomic structure, stoichiometry, reactions, gas laws, thermochemistry, and an introduction to solutions. Lab included. 

  • Course purpose: Interpreters/translators, Spanish teachers, or students seeking a degree in Spanish/Latin American studies need to have knowledge of environmental issues that affect Spanish speaking countries and communities culturally, geographically, economically, and politically.

  • Course purpose: This course provides you with perspective on present-day global environmental concerns. Students pursuing a degree in Spanish, Interpreting/translating, or Latin American studies are recommended to take this course.

Choose one

  • Course purpose: This course is recommended for a career in education, interpreting/translating, Spanish, or Latin American Studies. In these professions you will interact with diverse groups of people and need to demonstrate an understanding and sensitivity of those you serve. You will gain awareness and investigate issues surrounding ethnic identities.

  • Course purpose: Teachers need an understanding of systemic issues impacting education today, including sex, gender, race, ethnicity, and social stratification. This course provides a broad overview of the study of society and human interaction.
