Construction Management (AAS) Course Map

It provides you a clear path to complete your degree by listing a specific set of courses relevant to your program and career. The map is designed with the appropriate number of credits and meets degree requirements. Courses are organized in a recommended sequence; please schedule accordingly. If a course is unavailable, select the next appropriate course within the sequence. For each course, a purpose statement explains how the content relates to your career field. On this map, there may be instances when you will be required to select a course from several options. Use these purpose statements and notes to choose the course that best aligns with your interests and needs. You will also find action items to complete to assure you progress and graduate on time. While this map is a great guide to courses required to complete the Associate in Applied Science Construction Management, you are responsible for fulfilling all degree requirements. Questions? • 2.0 minimum grade in all CONST courses 

• 2.0 minimum cumulative GPA for all college-level credits 

• Minimum of 104 approved AAS-CM program credits 

• Meet all other Pierce College graduation expectations 

1. College Success


  • Course purpose: A foundational course to explore and affirm a career choice and build upon the skills, knowledge, and resources that will support you at Pierce College and beyond.

    • Successfully completing either COLLG 110 or COLLG 115 will fulfill the College Success requirement. 
    • A COLLG 110 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 110 course and a COLLG 115 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 115 course.

  • Course purpose: A construction management professional needs to have basic knowledge of how different businesses operate to design buildings, equipment, and interior needs. This includes having knowledge of the applications in banking, merchandising, inventory, depreciation and promissory notes. Introduction to simple statistics and the metric systems.

  •  

  • Note: The math course you select will depend on the Career Pathway Map you are following, the transfer institution/degree that you select, and your math placement guidance. Your advisor will assist you in selecting the relevant 5 or 7 credit course(s) based upon co-requisite options.

  • Course purpose: You will learn the technical aspects of construction systems, including the procedures and methods for masonry, steel, wood, and concrete construction. Recent trends in construction materials are also covered.

  • Course purpose: In this field you need to be able to communicate with all parties on a job site and need to be able to write clearly and concisely to ensure that projects completed on time and within scope and budget.

  • Course purpose: You will learn about construction estimating and bidding, including basic concepts, procedures, terminology, and pricing techniques.

  • Course purpose: You will learn how the needs of business or other formal organizations interact with individual needs, leadership styles, formal organizational policies and procedures, and general cultural patterns to determine how human beings act in work situations.

  • Course purpose: The entire construction management industry is based on the ability to communicate. This course will allow you to develop the skill to analyze audiences and adjust message delivery based on audience feedback.

  • Course purpose: As a construction management professional you will need to have great communication skills in order to make sure projects are completed on time, within budget, with quality and safety of all team members. A construction management professsional needs to build effective verbal and nonverbal communication skills across all cultures.

17. Construction Safety


  • Course purpose: You will learn construction industry standards for accident prevention, hazard identification, and compliance responsibility.These are emphasized in conjunction with an overview of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and other related federal and state legislative requirements.

  • Course purpose: In the construction management field you will write you own contracts, negotiate claims, dispute resolution with owners and subcontractors, and represent in bankruptcy court.

Note: If you plan to go into the Construction Management BAS program, you will need to take ECON 110, ECON& 201, BUS&101, or ECON&202

  • Course purpose: Knowledge of partnerships, bonds, corporations, cash flow statements, and financial statement analysis is important in the construction field to ensure the project is completed on time and budget.

  • Course purpose: As a construction management professional you need to have knowledge of supply and demand of products and the skills to  determine prices in a market economy in order to anticipate economic changes which could impact how you develop project estimates.

  • Course purpose: You will learn about the allocation of resources and supply and demand, labor, capital markets and international trade.  This is  essential knowledge when developing estimates.

  • Course purpose: You will learn about marketing, management, economics, international commerce, and finance production. This knowledge is important to have in this career. For example you may find yourself monitoring the stock market to determine the optimal time to purchase supplies.

  • Course purpose: Construction is an indicator of the economy doing well or not doing well. Having knowledge of the US economy will help you plan for employment opportunities and dips. Understanding of macroeconomics also aids in keeping business afloat by creating accurate 3-5 year projections for resources and projects.
