• COLLG 110 College Success (3 credits)

• Course purpose:  A foundational course to explore and affirm a career choice and build upon the skills, knowledge, and resources that will support you at Pierce College and beyond.

  • Successfully completing either COLLG 110 or COLLG 115 will fulfill the College Success requirement. 
  • A COLLG 110 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 110 course and a COLLG 115 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 115 course. 

2. Human Relations Course

Note: If you plan to go into the Construction Management BAS program, you will need to take either CMST&101 or CMST 105. 

• BUS 240 Human Relations in the Workplace (5 credits)

• Course purpose: You will learn how the needs of business or other formal organizations interact with individual needs, leadership styles, formal organizational policies and procedures, and general cultural patterns to determine how human beings act in work situations. 

• CMST& 101 Introduction to Communications (5 credits)

• Course purpose: The entire construction management industry is based on the ability to communicate. This course will allow you to develop the skill to analyze audiences and adjust message delivery based on audience feedback. 

• CMST& 240 Intercultural Communication (5 credits)

• Course purpose: The examination of the effects of culture upon the process of communication. Using theory and skill development, students are prepared to communicate effectively both within and across cultures.

4. Intro to Construction Management

• CONST 101 Introduction to Construction Mangement (5 credits)

• Course purpose: You will be introduced to common construction management concepts and processes including industry terminology, business practices, estimating/bidding, scheduling, project management, field operations and career pathways.

5. Construction Drawings

• CONST 140 Construction Drawings: Printreading (5 credits)

• Course purpose: You will be introduced to construction drawings with emphasis on reading, interpreting, and communicating the content of the documents.

6. Building Codes

• CONST 180 Building Codes (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Building codes drive the design and structural implications of the construction project.

7. Construction Documents

• CONST 150 Construction Documents (5 credits)

• Course purpose: You will learn about construction documents and their use as a tool to manage the construction process.

8. Means and Methods

• CONST 160 Means and Methods I (5 credits)

• Course purpose: You will learn the technical aspects of construction systems, including the procedures and methods for masonry, steel, wood, and concrete construction. Recent trends in construction materials are also covered.

9. Construction Safety

• CONST 250 Construction Safety and Accident Prevention (3 credits)

• Course purpose: You will learn construction industry standards for accident prevention, hazard identification, and compliance responsibility.  In addition you will receive an overview of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and other related federal and state legislative requirements.

• ENGL& 101 English Composition I (5 credits)

• Course purpose: In this field you need to be able to communicate with all parties on a job site and need to be able to write clearly and concisely to ensure that projects completed on time and within scope and budget.

   

  Note: Your advisor will assist you in reviewing your Guided Self Placement and selecting either the 5-credit or the 7-credit co-requisite ENGL& 101 + ENGLC 101 course.

• BTECA 250 Business Communications (5 credits)

• Course purpose: In this field you need to be able to communicate with all parties on a job site and need to be able to write clearly and concisely to ensure that projects completed on time and within scope and budget.

• Course purpose: You will learn about construction estimating and bidding, including basic concepts, procedures, terminology, and pricing techniques.

12. Planning and Scheduling

• Course purpose: You will learn the principles of scheduling and planning to control and manage a construction project.

13. Construction Project Management

• CONST 260 Construction Project Management (5 credits)

• Course purpose: You will learn about project organization, documentation, and control methods utilized to manage all facets of a project from start to completion.

14. Math Course

• Course purpose: In this field a specialist needs to have basic knowledge of how different businesses operate to design buildings, equipment, and interior needs. You would gain knowledge of the applications in banking, merchandising, inventory, depreciation and promissory notes. Introduction to simple statistics and the metric systems.
